There’s no better way to beat the heat than enjoying time in and on a body of water. Before you pack up your swimsuit and find a dogsitter, you should know that your dog can safely enjoy the water with you.

Not all dogs love the water, but if your pup is adventurous then this summer is a great time to get him in on the action with you. Before embarking on any water-bound activity with your pup, always put safety first. This means your dog should only go with you on your water trip if he will be supervised, have safety equipment (doggy life vest), and is proven to be a proficient swimmer.

Below are some tried and true activities that you and your dog can enjoy on a lake, river, or in a pool this summer season.

  1. Swimming
The most obvious activity anyone could partake in this summer is swimming! Whether it be in a pool, lake, river or even the ocean (be careful of currents), both you and your dog can get your swim on. Start by introducing your dog in shallow water to gauge comfortability and swim strength, then venture out further if you and your dog are doing well.

Some dogs, like Labradors, can swim all day and never get tired. Be sure to keep an eye on your dog to make sure he’s not getting too tired to doggy-paddle his way back to solid ground.
  2. Kayaking
Strap on the life vests and set sail in a kayak this summer, your best four-legged friend at your side. Even weak-swimmers can enjoy a kayak ride with their owner, dozing away in the sun without the need to ever get a paw wet.

Double check that your dog will properly fit into the kayak and don’t forget to bring an umbrella to offer him shade, as well as some water. The sun can reflect off the water and make it hotter in the kayak than on land.
  3. Paddle Boarding
For the skilled water loving hounds, try paddle boarding. Many outdoor enthusiasts have taken to having their dogs join them on the board as the paddle out into a lake. While not recommended to do in the ocean, paddleboarding is a fun test of balance of skill for both you and your dog. This unique experience can help strengthen your bond and offer some unforgettable memories.

It is recommended to have your dog in a vest on tethered to a leash to ensure you do not get separated should one of you fall off the board.

  1. Dock Diving
This one is mostly for the dogs – though owners are free to jump off docks too. For those with retrievers or any other strong swimmers, tossing a toy into the water from a dock is an enhanced version of fetch. In fact, dock diving is a competitive sport for working/hunting dog breeds where they showcase their natural abilities to retrieve from water.
