Sneezing, coughing, itching.., seasonal allergies can really put us through it. As we attempt to treat our symptoms, we may not even realize that our dog is also suffering. Dogs are very likely to have seasonal allergies, just like humans. Causes come in the same form like: mold, dander, pollen (of all kinds), and more.

While identifying and treating your dog’s allergies is paramount for successfully relieving their symptoms, sometimes a little at-home remedy can help keep it at bay. So first and foremost, consult your veterinarian if you suspect your dog is having environmental or seasonal allergies.

In the meantime, here are five ways you can address your dog’s allergies symptoms at home.

  1. Bathe Regularly (But Not Too Much)
A gentle, hypoallergenic shampoo can soothe itchy skin and wash away allergens. After exposure to the allergen (like walking around in grass or playing outside), it’s worth giving your dog a rinse. You can find allergy specific and medicated shampoos at most pet retailers. Oatmeal-based shampoos are also a great natural option to relieve itchy skin. Limit baths to once every 2–4 weeks to avoid drying out your dog’s skin and potentially exasperating their symptoms.

  2. Wipe Those Paws
After walks, use a damp cloth or pet-safe wipes to clean your dog’s paws and underbelly. This helps remove pollen and other irritants they may have picked up outside. Medicated wipes, like antifungal wipes, are highly recommended by veterinarians to use between paw pads and other sensitive areas of the dog with a lot of exposure to allergen irritants.

  3. Try an Elimination Diet
If environmental allergies do not seem to be at play, or all treatments for it are unsuccessful, it may be time to consider a potential food allergy. If food allergies are suspected, work with your vet to try an elimination diet. This involves feeding a simplified diet and slowly reintroducing ingredients to identify the trigger. This can be a long process, so be patient and allow your dog time to adjust to each diet.

  4. Use an Air Purifier
If you have allergies, you know that sneezing and coughing are major ways your body responds. Our dogs are the same, they can be just as sensitive (if not more) to airborne allergens. Reducing airborne allergens like dust and pollen can make a big difference. An air purifier with a HEPA filter can help keep your home’s air clean and allergy-friendly for you and all of your furry friends.

  5. Add Omega-3s
It may seem odd that adding an oil to your dog’s food can help ease environmental allergies, but it’s true. Supplements like fish oil can reduce inflammation and improve skin health, making your dog feel less itchy. Always check with your vet before adding new supplements to your dog’s diet.
