As we learn more about a dog’s nutritional needs, the more we discover we can provide for them. Like humans, some dogs require supplemental vitamins and nutrients in addition to their daily diet. The reasons for these needs vary, but nearly one-third of dogs take additional supplements and vitamins daily to help their systems function to the best of their ability.
Below are the four most commonly used and recommended supplements for dogs.
- Probiotics
Humans commonly use probiotics, or a series of bacteria that live in our gut to help aid in digestion. Because our canine companions can also experience digestive issues, probiotic usage has increased.
These live bacteria come in many forms – pills, powder, liquids, purees, etc. – and promote intestinal health. This in turn can help resolve gut issues like diarrhea, lack of appetite, irregular bowel movements, weight loss, and more.
- Fish Oil
Another supplement often used by humans, fish oil contains omega-3 fatty acids that are a vital part of developing a healthy coat and skin for your dog. Fish oils are very effective at improving coat quality, but first improving the quality of the skin and assisting with things dandruff and dryness.
Recent research even suggests that fish oil can be anti-inflammatory, meaning it also helps with joint health. If your dog is itchy or suffering from allergies and joint issues, speak with your vet about adding fish oil to his diet.
- Glucosamine
Perhaps the most popular supplement not just for dogs, but animals of all kinds, is an amino sugar known as glucosamine. Glucosamine is naturally found in the fluid that surrounds our joints and assists in building and retaining cartilage.
Glucosamine supplements are typically used to treat joint-related concerns like arthritis. It comes in many forms – powders, pills, gels, and chews – but typically takes several weeks of consistent usage before results can be seen. Because of this, some veterinarians may recommend a more fast-acting treatment for your dog’s arthritis. However, it never hurts to start your dog on a glucosamine supplement early to help prevent or delay arthritis later in life.
- Antioxidants
Found in vitamins C and E, antioxidants protect our bodies from free radicals that affect our cells. Antioxidant supplements for dogs can help counteract age-related cognitive dysfunction and reduce inflammation in dogs with heart disease. Blueberries are a great source of added antioxidants and are safe to add to your dog’s diet.
As always, consult with your veterinarian if you have thoughts or questions about adding supplements to your dog’s diet. They will be able to guide you in proper dosage, and overall health needs, and even recommend particular brands for best efficacy.
