Bringing a dog into your family is a big decision – one that can be very exciting and overwhelming all at once. There is no perfect breed of dog for a family, it all comes down to the dog itself, your family, and the right expectations.

Families with young children need to be especially thoughtful with the type of dog they adopt since there are more variables at play. While any breed, or mix thereof, can produce a quality family dog, there are some that blend into families quite well.

1.       Golden Retriever
Quite possibly the most iconic family dog, the Golden Retriever is highly regarded as the friendliest dog breed in existence. His jolly, patient demeanor is unmatched, and his obedience makes him one of the most popular breed choices for families of all sizes.

Golden Retrievers boast a great work ethic and desire to please. Pack them up and take them on all your adventures, they’re sociable and happy to be wherever your family is. On the downside, they do require a bit of grooming and are prone to many forms of cancer. But don’t let that deter you, they are ideal family dogs!

2.       Labrador
The close cousin of the Golden Retriever, the Labrador has usurped the status as the most popular breed in the United States. And for good reason! Labs are as friendly as they are energetic, making them perfect companions for kids bound with excess energy. They love water, fetching, hiking, and sleeping on the couch – what more does any family need?

Like kids, they can get into things they shouldn’t and are notorious at vet offices for eating things that shouldn’t be eaten.

3.       Beagle
This classic, small-sized hound comes with a big heart and that loud howl. Beagles are beloved for many reasons, but mostly for their loyalty, patience, and intelligence. This hunting breed is driven to please and loves being part of the pack. Don’t let their little legs fool you, these dogs can keep up with you all day or relax on the porch – whichever fits your family!

Don’t be surprised when they follow their nose – that keen sense of smell that makes them great hunters can also lead them astray. A family with a Beagle knows that a good fence is a must.

4.       Pug
While not quite known for their athletic prowess, Pugs are the goofy clown that belongs in every family. Their tenacious attitudes and ability to not take anything seriously make them a fun family dog. From their goofy snorts to their fearless personality, Pugs really can get along with just about any other living creature. Great for families with less space or reduced time for exercise, the Pug doesn’t require much.

Like any flat-faced breed, it’s important to know that they do come with some health concerns including difficulty breathing.

5.       Mutts
Mixed-breed dogs are truly diamonds in the rough. These dogs get to represent the best of different breeds and are generally healthier than their purebred counterparts. Of course, adopting a mixed breed requires you to do more research on those breeds to determine if they’re the right dog for your family. But when given a chance, mutts really can be the ideal family dog.
